Annotation In Translation From The Perspective Of Thick Translation:A Translation Report On A Concise History Of Greece

The translation of historical texts is also the translation and representation of culture.This project is an English-to-Chinese historical translation of A Concise History of Greece.The conciseness of this book is both its strength and weakness.Although it provides relatively detailed introduction to key historical figures at the end of the book,the book lacks enough explanatory annotations to make the narration more logical to foreign readers.During the reading process,it is difficult for readers with little or no prior knowledge of Greek history to fully understand the Greek culture and its significance as illustrated in the book.Therefore,the main obstacle during the translation process is how to better present cultural terms in the source text to narrow the cultural gap of the readers.This author employs the idea of "thick translation" proposed by Kwame Anthony Appiah as her main translation strategy to solve the problems mentioned above.Annotation is the main approach applied to achieve thick translation of A Concise of History of Greece.This author achieves thick translation by both explicit annotation including footnotes and bracketed in-text notes,and implicit annotation including contextual amplification and paraphrasing,hoping that the translation could offer an entry point for Greek history enthusiasts and help researchers to study both Greek cultural works as well as translation of historical and cultural texts.
