This is a translation report on Chapter 11 to 15 of The Byzantine Empire written by Charles William Chadwick Oman, who is a British military historian. The book belongs to informative text,intr0 ducing the history, culture, politics, economy, social and religious life in different periods of the Byzantine Empire. After analyzing the source author, translation purpose and text type, the translator adopts Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation as the theoretical guidance, and combines the basic translation methods, mainly from the lexical and syntactical levels, including selection of word meaning, semantic extension, part of speech conversion, amplification, and the application of the idiom words, and also covering division, adjustment of word order and the change of the voices,to solve the problems in translation.Through translation practice and case analysis, the translator realizes that if the translation wants to achieve the best translation effectively,it is not possible to use semantic translation alone or communicative translation alone, but to combine the two closely so as to make the translation convey the content of the original text accurately, and at the same time conform to the Chinese expression habits.
