| This is a translation report.The source text is taken from the fourth chapter of the book,A Global History of Warfare and Technology: From Slings to Robots,which was written by Kaushik Roy,a professor in the Department of History at Jadavpur University,India.This book addresses the global history of technology,warfare,and state formation from the Stone Age to the Information Age.Focusing on technology and warfare in Eurasia,it analyzes conflicts within and between countries,explores the interplay between technological and non-technological factors,and charts the evolution of warfare from ancient times to the present.As a historical text,this book is professionally and rigorously worded,with many complex sentences and a huge amount of information.The main difficulties in this translation project include the understanding and translation of proper nouns,technical terms,long and complex sentences and the manifestation of implicit information in the source text.Guided by communicative translation theory raised by Peter Newmark and thick translation theory proposed by Kwame Anthony Appiah,the translator adopts the translation technique of explicitation,using translation skills like division,omission,inversion and conversion to solve difficulties of the translating process and ensure accuracy,clarity and fluency of the translation.With the assistance of translation tools and related texts,the translator deepens his understanding of the source text and strives to convey its information completely and explicitly and improve the reader’s reading experience by adding annotations to the translation.This project is aimed at providing some solutions for the translation of historical texts and sharing some experience for translators engaged in the translation of such kinds of texts.And it is also hoped that the target text can provide some reference for Chinese researchers,graduate and undergraduate students in related fields,and stimulate the interest of Chinese general readers in the global history of warfare and technology. |
