“Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People” is the core of developing socialist education with Chinese characteristics and the key to cultivating socialist builders and successors with all-round development of morality,intelligence,physical fitness,aesthetics and labor.As the main carrier of educational ideas,goals and contents,English courses in senior high school also undertakes the important task of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People”.Therefore,this study will focus on the effectiveness and existing problems of the implementation of the fundamental task of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People” in high school English teaching in Hanzhong City,and put forward optimizing strategies on this basis.This research takes some English teachers,students and English classes in three Senior High schools in Hanzhong City as respondents.By adopting questionnaire survey,class observation and interview,this paper investigates the current situation of the implementation of the fundamental task of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People” in high school English teaching in Hanzhong City.At present,while making some achievements,there are also some problems:(1)Teachers and students’ understanding of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People” is uneven;(2)Educational objectives exploration in English textbooks is not comprehensive enough;(3)English teachers lack the effective cultivation process of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People” in teaching;(4)Implementation of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People” is insufficient outside the English classroom;(5)Students development is unbalanced in all aspects.Weaknesses exist in students’ development.The main reasons are as follows:The quality of teachers in all aspects needs to be improved;the dynamic implementation of the teaching process needs to be strengthened;the development of students in all aspects needs to be paid more attention to.Based on the survey results,this research proposes optimizing strategies from the following three aspects.The first aspect,the teachers themselves mainly lay the foundation of the fundamental task of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People” from three points: Clarifying the teaching concept of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People”,improving their self-cultivation and shaping their characters,and sticking to the concept of lifelong learning.The second aspect,the teaching process is mainly realized from the three points of pre-class,in-class and out-of-class:(1)English teachers should carry out pre-class English teaching by studying textbooks,investigating students’ situation and integrating resources;(2)English teachers need to conduct English teaching by creating situation,respecting students,carrying out activities,innovating methods and implementing evaluation;(3)English teachers must further deepen the implementation of the fundamental task of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating People” after class by activities implementation,task driven,teacher-student communication and timely reflection.The third one,in teaching core elements,it is necessary for English teachers to implement mainly through the following three points:(1)English teachers need pay full attention to the implementation of all aspects of the Essential Characters training;(2)English teachers should effectively improve students’ Key Abilities;(3)English teachers ought to assure bset attention to the guidance of students’ Emotions,Attitudes and Values.
