The Jigsaw method is a teaching method that chunks complete teaching tasks into parts and then splices them back together to form the whole.Nowadays,there are some practical difficulties in reading teaching in China.So,the teachers should look for effective ways to improve the students’ reading ability.Therefore,in order to improve the teaching quality of middle school English reading and implement the requirements of the new curriculum standards,this study applies the fourth-generation Jigsaw method to the middle school English reading classroom in order to explore the effect of the Jigsaw method in middle school English reading teaching,and finally draw teaching insights.In this study,a middle school in Linyi City was chosen as the research setting,and two natural classes of the second grade with a total of 110 students were selected for the study,and a three-month teaching application study was conducted.Subjects were divided into experimental and control groups.The experimental group consisted of 54 students,and the control group was 56.The analysis of the pre-test scores showed that the English reading levels of the two classes were comparable.During the intervention period,the experimental class was guided to teach reading using the fourth-generation Jigsaw method,while the control class continued to use the traditional reading instruction method.The research process was divided into the pre-experimental preparation phase,the experimental phase,and the post-experimental effect verification phase,and the research methods such as interview method,questionnaire survey,and test method were used to conduct the experiment,and then the data obtained from the experiment were analyzed by using SPSS26.0 statistical software,and finally the research conclusions were drawn.The study found that the application of the fourth-generation Jigsaw method in junior high school English reading teaching would have a positive impact on students’ English reading learning:(1)the fourth-generation Jigsaw method helps improve students’ interest in English reading;(2)the fourth-generation Jigsaw method helps improve students’ sense of cooperation and classroom participation;(3)the fourth-generation Jigsaw method helps improve students’ English reading performance.This study puts forward six suggestions for optimizing the application of the fourth-generation Jigsaw method to English reading teaching:(1)Teachers provide the necessary instruction before class so that students have a preliminary understanding of the fourth-generation Jigsaw method;(2)Teachers study the teaching materials and select appropriate teaching contents;(3)Teachers grasp the nearest development zone and scientifically assign learning tasks;(4)Teachers group students in heterogeneous groups to fully enhance students’ sense of cooperation;(5)Teachers conduct multiple evaluations combined with formative evaluations to enhance monitoring and assessment;(6)Teachers reflect on teaching after class to improve the teaching process.
