Abstract/Summary:
The source text of this translation report is selected from The Temaoke Festival of the Jinuo People(Jinuozu Temaoke)by Zhu Yingzhan, which investigates and records the whole celebration process, key figures and practical functions of the Temaoke Festival(the Iron-forging Festival),an intangible cultural heritage of the Jinuo people in Yunnan Province. The first and second chapters of this text, which introduce the festival’s origin, celebration date, villages holding the ceremonies, the whole process of ceremonies as well as the follow-up activities after the festival, are excerpted for Chinese-English translation practice. The source text is characterized by culture-loaded terms, long sentences and non-subject sentences. In order to effectively reproduce the Jinuo’s culture contained in the source text and provide a relatively complete and appropriate translation, the translator chooses Cultural Translation Theory as the guiding theory of this translation practice.Under the guidance of Cultural Translation Theory,at lexical level, the translator mainly adopts the translation techniques of annotation and omission to add supplementary instructions and delete redundant Chinese characters,so as to accurately convey the Jinuo’s culture;at syntactic level, the translator mainly adopts the translation techniques of combination, conversion and division to translate long sentences and non-subject sentences to make the sentence structure compact, the focus prominent, and the level clear. The translator hopes to introduce the Jinuo’s culture to English readers by translating the source text,so as to promote cultural communication.
