| With the rapid development of technology and the continuous improvement of national living standards, the digitalization of information has diluted the communication and listening between people, and it has become especially important to know how to listen to others properly.More and more popular science texts of psychology are coming into the public’s view to adapt to the rhythm of human social development and provide fresh nutrients for the human spiritual world. The translation of popular science works has become a bridge to popularize scientific knowledge to the general public.Based on the characteristics of popular science works, the content of the source text, and the analysis of language characteristics, this translation practice report selects the translation practice of chapters 1 to 4 of You’re Not Listening as the research material.By analyzing the Chinese translation of this text with the guidance of the translation variation theory proposed by Professor Huang Zhonglian and summarizing the difficulties and problems in translation, the translator finally borrows six means that can effectively solve the following problems.Translation practice shows that the translation variation theory has guiding significance in presenting four characteristics of popular science works: first, the use of addition translation adds clarification to the content and terms that are likely to cause ambiguity in the original text, and the use of omission translation selectively cuts complex and repetitive information, both of which are conducive to maximizing the transmission of scientific knowledge.Based on the differences in information acquisition habits between target language readers and source language readers, adaptation and compilation to finely reorganize and process the source text information can realize the localization of the translation and meet the reading needs of target language readers.Third,to enable the target language readers to obtain information quickly, the use of combination and narration can help the readers clarify the text’s logic, given that the source text implies an inherently logical structure. Therefore, the translator believes that it is necessary to flexibly use the eight methods in the translation process to reproduce the four characteristics of popular science text as far as possible: scientificity, popularity, literariness and interestingness. This translation practice report also provides references for the English-Chinese translation practice of texts in the same genre. |
