| With the development of globalization and the rapid progress in science and technology, more and more popular science books are brought into China. As one of the most important medium of science and technology communication, popular science books are playing a more and more irreplaceable role. The popular science text can not only help to spread scientific knowledge but also improve the readers’ scientific literacy. So it is of great importance to popularize scientific knowledge through scientific text translation.In order to bring in a series of outstanding physical popular science books, Shanghai Science and Technology Education Press entrusted the author to translate How to Save the World with Salad and Other Outrageous Science Problems. In the translation report, the author takes German functionalists’ skopos theory as the theoretical guidance, exploring the text features and translation methods of juvenile physical popular science text and trying to solve the translation problems through the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule. On the one hand, the author can improve translation skills during the process; on the other hand, these methods may provide a reference for future juvenile physical popular science books’ translation.The translation practice report is made up of four parts. Part one is a brief introduction to the background information, project significance, text features and the request of the client. Part two is centered on the translation project, including the pre-translating preparation, the translating process and the post-translating quality control. Part three is the case study, the main body of this report. The author tries to find better ways to translate the text, sentences and words by combining effective translation methods. In part four, the author makes a summary and reflection on the translation practice, pointing out that skopos theory is of realistic significance to the translation of popular science books. |
