| This report is based on the E-C translation practice of the popular science book How the World Really Works.The translation of popular science texts can promote the dissemination and exchange of advanced science and technology in the world and strengthen the development of social science undertakings.In this project,the first chapter of the popular science book How the World Really Works was chosen as the translation material,which discusses the working principle of energy and its influence on the functioning of modern society and has significant inspiration for human development.The original text of this practical task is a popular science text,which pays great attention to the scientific knowledge and rigorous logic passed on to the readers.As a prominent feature of science text,there are a large number of prepositions and prepositional phrases in the original text.However,the essential difference between Chinese and English determines that these prepositions and prepositional phrases can not be exactly translated into Chinese counterparts.Therefore,a systematic study of the translation methods of prepositions and prepositional phrases has a crucial influence on faithfully conveying the content of the original text.This practice report is based on Category Shifts under Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory,which mainly includes class shift,structure shift and unit shift.After a sufficient number of case analysis,the author comes to the conclusion that in the translation of prepositions,class shifts can be used to convert them into adjectives,verbs and conjunctions.In the translation of prepositional phrases,unit shifts can be carried out according to the specific contex,and the prepositional phrases can be downgraded to words or upgraded to sentences.It can also carry out the shift between post-modifier and pre-modifier,active voice and passive voice,affirmative structure and negative structure when the sentence structure permits. |
