This paper takes the Chinese translation of the third and fourth chapters of Boom and Bust: A History of Global Financial Bubbles as an example to study the translation of popular science texts under the guidance of translation variation theory. The original text covers venture capital, and the text has a clear structure and sophisticated theories, which make it suitable as a popular science textbook or extra-curricular reading material for students in universities. However, the text has complex sentence structures, and contains many financial terms and vocabulary related to history, culture and law.A popular science textbook requires different adaptation of the original text to make financial knowledge more understandable,so as to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of learning and make the translation accepted by more college students. The essence of the theory of variant translation lies in “variation”,which allows different forms of adaptations according to the needs of readers. Therefore, this theory is suitable for the translation of textbooks.Although the theory of variant translation has been basically established, case studies and empirical analyses of specific translations are still rare, variant translation practices are insufficient, which needs to be further deepened. Therefore, the theory of variant translation is used to guide this translation practice.Based on the practice, this study explores the application of variant translation in translating popular science texts to achieve an organic balance between achieving accurate and faithful translation of popular science texts, improving reading efficiency and meeting the needs of financial students,so as to enrich the research on application and practicality research of the variant translation theory.
