A Practice Report On Simulated Chinese-English Consecutive Interpretation Of The First China-ASEAN Civil Aviation Cooperation Forum

Based on the material of the round table of the 1st China ASEAN Civil Aviation Cooperation Forum,a simulated Chinese-English consecutive interpretation practice was conducted.The report aims to record the interpreting process and analyze and summarize the interpretation effect by the theoretical framework of Gile’s effort model.This report introduces the material background of this interpretation practice and records the process,including pre-interpretation preparation,interpretation process,and post-interpretation reflection.With Gile’s effort model,the author categorizes the problems that emerged in the interpretation practice into three,namely,listening comprehension,short-term memory and note-taking,and speech production.In analyzing the deficiencies of specific cases,the author concludes that in consecutive interpreting,for the problems in listening comprehension,the strategies of compromise,information reorganization,analysis synthesis,and advanced logical derivation can be used;for the problems caused by short-term memory the strategies of outline memory and logical reasoning mnemonics can be adopted;as the problems in notes,improving the structure of notes,highlighting logical relationships,indicating the primary and secondary relationships with symbols such as serial numbers and creating personal note symbols can be employed;methods of omission,reorganization,and increasing extralinguistic knowledge can be taken to solve the problems in speech production.With Gile’s effort model and the proposed strategies,the interpreter can better allocate energy to alleviate the cognitive load.Through the case study and reflection,the author hopes to summarize shortcomings in practice and provides reference values for other interpreting students.
