Consecutive interpreting is a process of cognitive processing, requiring interpreters to carry out multiple tasks at the same time.Gile’s put forward the Effort Model for consecutive interpreting and divided the interpreting process into two phases: Listening and Note-taking and target-speech production. From April 21 to May 15,2018,the author interned as an interpreter for a Foreign Assistant Program of China organized by the Department of Commerce of Hunan province---the seminar for officials in information and mainstream media in Gambia,2018.Through this interpreting practice, the author achieved a better understanding of Gile’s Effort Model.By combining the two phases of Gile’s Effort Model with methods to analyze problem triggers and tactics to prevent saturation, the author developed an analysis model of problem-problem trigger-coping strategy to move the Effort Model further towards the practical use.Thirty typical instances from the author’s interpreting practices were categorized as Listening,Note-taking,Memory,Note-reading and Production. In addition, the author analyzed each of them according to the analysis model. After analyzing 30 examples with the combination of Gile’s Effort Model and the analysis model, the author found that it promotes interpreters’ capacity in locating problems, analyzing problem triggers, and providing coping strategies.More significantly,Gile’s Effort Model provides methods for interpreters to understand difficulties they have experienced and ways to enhance their quality of interpreting.
