In 476 AD,Odovacar deposed Romulus, the emperor of the Western Roman Empire. This historical event is often regarded as a symbol of the demise of the Western Roman Empire. This historical stage is easy to lead to the fragmentation of historical research, and also easy to lead to the arbitrary conclusion that Odovacar is the opposite of the Roman world. The historical study of this period shows that the deposed event in 476 is still to be discussed. After deposing Romulus,Odovacar controlled the political situation in Italy for more than ten years, until he was completely defeated by Theodoric, the leader of the East Gothic in493.During the reign of Odovacar, the political environment in Italy did not change greatly, and the Roman elite living in Italy did not respond strongly to this.Odovacar’s rule over the Italian region did not infringe the interests of the Romans too much.He met the land needs of the barbarians in a compromise way, issued coins in the name of the emperor, maintained the Roman system tradition such as the election of Roman consuls, repaired the Roman public buildings, and thus attracted the Roman senators. He returned the honor guard of the Roman emperor to the East Roman Empire, declared his loyalty to the emperor of the East Roman Empire, and presented the trophy to the East Roman emperor after winning the battle with the Rugi people.Through the study of Odovacar’s land and monetary policies in Italy,as well as his political tendencies in diplomatic activities,it can be clear that Odovacar and the Roman world are not antagonistic relations, and even have a considerable degree of maintenance and respect for the Roman world. Therefore, the definition of the destruction of the Western Roman Empire does not apply to Odovacar’s political foothold in Italy. The relationship between Odovacar and the Roman world is not a simple opposition, nor can it be defined as harmonious unity. The Italian region under Odovacar’s rule is only nominally under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Roman Emperor, and is actually an independent regime. This complex relationship reflects the political environment in the late ancient times. In the process of the decline of the Roman world, the barbarians in it also changed their choice. With the deepening of the decline of the Roman Empire, the willingness to maintain the Roman Empire also declined.Even so,the cultural tradition retained by the Roman Empire still has vitality and will not be easily abandoned.Odovacar and the later East Goth regime are good proof.
