With the continuous improvement of material living standards in modern society, people are increasingly driven to explore their spiritual world, which has led to a growing appreciation for the significance of reading. An Introduction to Philosophical Life is a typical social science book, which provides a wealth of philosophical ideas to meet people’s demands for improving their humanistic literacy to a certain extent. An Introduction to Philosophical Life was written by Edward F.Mc Gushin,an American professor of philosophy. And the book has eight chapters in which the author details the philosophical ideas of Michel Foucault. This report selects the fifth chapter of the book Foucault’s Cartesian Meditations as the translation practice and adopts Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion theory as its theoretical framework. Then it focuses on the translation strategies of conjunctive cohesion under the guidance of the Cohesion Theory.Halliday and Hasan propose that the main methods of discourse cohesion are reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction, with the conjunctive cohesion further divided into four categories, namely, additive conjunction, adversative conjunction, causal conjunction and temporal conjunction. This report focuses on conjunction and presents translation strategies through specific examples, such as amplification, omission, conversion and inversion. And by employing these strategies, the translation becomes more fluent and natural, and conforms to the expression habits of the target language. This report is composed of five chapters.Chapter one provides an overview of the translation project, including the background of the project, the significance and the layout of the report.Chapter two introduces the process of text translation, including preparation before text translation, process in text translation and proofreading after text translation.Chapter three presents the theoretical framework, offering a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the current research landscape concerning Cohesion Theory and conjunction both domestically and internationally,as well as the classification of conjunction proposed by Halliday and Hasan. In chapter four, the translator analyzes the corresponding translation strategies of conjunctive devices with specific examples from the fifth chapter of An Introduction to Philosophical Life based on the classification of conjunction. And then, five translation strategies are promoted, namely amplification, omission, conversion, inversion and recasting. Finally, chapter five summarizes the translation strategies adopted in the translation of the social science text and points out the findings and limitations of this report. |
