Challenging the Monolingual Mindset was co-authored by 16 scholars and edited by John Hayeke and Yvette Slaughter,two linguistic experts in the University of Melbourne.The book mainly introduces global language policies,environment and application.The translator translated Chapter Eleven and Chapter Twelve of the book,which are concerned with the transformation of the language system in Australia and the development of Italian.The source text is a social science text,which aims to popularize scientific knowledge.The language of social science text is accurate and rigorous,which poses difficulties for translation.In the translation process,the translator found that grammatical cohesive devices is different in Chinese and English.Therefore,the translator adopts some translation strategies to make the target text consistent with Chinese expressions.Thus,this report discusses the translation strategies from the perspective of grammatical cohesion(reference,substitution and conjunction).The translator expects that this report will provide some references for future translation practices.This report consists of five chapters.The first chapter introduces the background and the significance of the research,as well as the analysis of the source texts.The translation process is introduced in Chapter Two.Chapter Three explains the definition of grammatical cohesion(reference,substitution and conjunction).In Chapter Four,the translator puts forward the translation strategies from the three perspectives of reference,substitution and connection,and makes a case study.In Chapter Five,the translator puts forward findings and points out limitations in this report.
