A Report On The C-e Translation Of Mineral Resources Research Text From The Perspective Of Cohesion Theory

Since the reform and opening up,great strides have been made in science and technology of China.Especially with the popularization of globalization,the exchange of science and technology between countries becomes more and more frequent and close.In some specific fields of science and technology,our research and innovation are at the forefront of the world.In order to make foreign scholars have a better understanding of the progress of domestic research instantly and promote the communication and cooperation effectively,the translation of science and technology is indispensable.What’s more,the translation quality plays a decisive role in this kind of communication and cooperation.This practice report mainly records the whole process of my translation practice on the text of mineral resources research and major findings and reflections on my translation.The materials used in this report are finished and collected during my work placement in a mineral resources research center which is attached to the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences as a translator.The theoretical basis of this report is the cohesion theory established by Halliday and Hasan.As the style of science and technology focuses on rigorous logicality and language standardization,it is very important to deal with the textual cohesion in the course of translation.According to the cohesion theory,cohesive devices can be divided into two categories: the grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.Besides,the grammatical cohesion consists of reference,substitution,ellipsis and conjunction.The lexical cohesion can also be segmented into the devices of repetition,synonymy,antonymy,hyponymy and collocation.In this translation practice,the cohesion theory talked above is properly applied in translation materials,which makes the cohesion of the text more fluent and deliberate.The report is made up of five parts.Part one is a brief introduction to the translation practice,including the description of the task background and the whole structures and contents of the report.Part two is the review of the whole process of translation,which contains the pre-translation work,the source text analysis,the target text production and the post-translation work.The third part is an introductionto the theoretical basis through the translation practice.On the one hand,it is the introduction to cohesion theory;on the other hand,it presents the feasibility study of cohesion theory applied in scientific and technological translation.The fourth part is the case analysis which demonstrates the effectiveness of the five cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan in cohesion theory applied in the practice of science and technology translation.The last part is the summary of the whole translation practice.Among them,some findings and experience in practice are shared.In addition,reflections on the emerging problems in translation process and suggestions for future translation practice are included.
