A Report On The E-C Translation Of Conflicted American Landscapes（Excerpts） ——Techniques Of Coping With Grammatical Cohesive Devices In The Translation Of Social Science Text

This paper is a report on the English-Chinese translation of Conflicted American Landscapes（Excerpts）.The book discusses the conflicts between America’s natural landscape and its science,religion,identity and politics.The author selects,among all the 11 chapters,Chapters 4 and 10 as the material for translation and the object of case analysis.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory,the author analyzes English and Chinese grammatical cohesive devices according to Halliday and Hassan’s classification of textual cohesion.There are four kinds of grammatical cohesion,including reference,substitution,ellipsis and conjunction.In view of the influence of the differences between English and Chinese cohesion on translation,the author mainly adopts four translation techniques,including amplification,omission,conversion and equivalence,so as to achieve the readability and fluency of the translation.The author,by exploring and summarizing the types of cohesive devices and translation techniques,provides reference for the translation of social science texts.
