| Cohesion is an important concept in the framework of systemic functional linguistics and is mainly used in text analysis.It is thanks to the presence of cohesion that isolated sentences and paragraphs can be related to each other to form a semantically fluent and readable discourse.English and Chinese belong to different linguistic systems,in which the specific use of cohesive devices is not the same.Therefore,in the process of translation,it is necessary to study respective cohesive devices of the source language and the target language and the differences between them to achieve proper conversing.The translator selected Foucault and the Art of Ethics written by Timothy O’ Leary as translation material.It belongs to social science text,with profound language,strong literature and logic.In the process of translation,it is very important for the translator to deal with cohesive devices correctly.The discourse with obvious cohesive elements in this text are systematically sorted and classified according to the types of grammatical cohesion,lexical cohesion,and punctuation cohesion.Among them,the grammatical cohesion includes reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction.On this basis,the most representative discourses are selected for case analysis,and the translation methods of cohesive devices are analyzed under the guidance of Halliday and Hasan’s textual Cohesion theory.This paper includes four parts.The first part introduces the translation task;The second part is the description of the translation process;The third part is the introduction of cohesion theory;The fourth part is the main body of this paper,focusing on the translation strategies of various cohesive devices in social science texts,such as retention,omission,repetition and conversing,etc.The fifth part summarizes the translation strategies adopted in the translation of cohesion devices in social science texts and the shortcomings of the translation. |
