Yi Jian Zhi is a novel of strange notes written by Hong Mai.There are many stories of scholars who failed in the imperial examinations of the Song Dynasty. As a representative and many social groups under the imperial examination system, scholars’ mentality, life state and identity changes after failure are worthy of attention. To study this group,we can see the changes in the status of scholars in society, which is helpful to grasp the changes to the ancient social class concept as a whole, and also enrich and supplement the research of the imperial examination system. From the existing relevant research results,it is not enough to pay attention to the materials and ideas provided by Yi Jian Zhi,so this paper takes Yi Jian Zhi as the text to study the group of failed scholars in the Song Dynasty. The first chapter introduces the basic situation of the group of failed scholars in the Song Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, with the popularization of education, the number of scholars participating in the imperial examination soared. With a limited number of places available, competition is growing. Therefore,a large number of exam failures are created, and the scholars who fail are the majority of the group of scholars. The second chapter expounds Yi Jian Zhi’s basic situation and artistic characteristics, focusing on the author’s creative ideas.Secondly,by systematically combing the historical materials related to the group of failed scholars in Yi Jian Zhi,it is found that the author’s motives for recording related stories are curiosity, benevolence, sympathy, etc. The third chapter focuses on the way out and identity change after the failure of scholars. They may continue to take examinations and other ways to win official opportunities;or make a living from their own knowledge and culture;others have become doctors, businessmen and other professions,or have become idlers.Yi Jian Zhi undoubtedly shows the various choices of failed scholars in the Song Dynasty. The fourth chapter analyzes the failure of group selection and identity transformation of scholars, reflecting the cultural mentality and social concept of scholars. The group of failed scholars showed their obsession and ambivalent attitude, and their choices varied according to their needs. The reason for the ambivalent attitude of Song Dynasty society lies in the germination of ideological reform in Song Dynasty society, but it is not complete. The conclusion is a brief summary of the main contents, points of view and shortcomings.
