Learning English is a multi-faceted endeavor that involves not just listening to but also speaking, reading, and writing in English,as well as translating. All of these can’t work without the correct use of English Grammar, which is one of the most crucial components in learning English.Hence, the ability to grasp grammatical concepts is very necessary for language acquisition. It may enhance students’ academic achievement, help them better comprehend and utilize the language, and establish a basis for their future communication in English. To help the students develop grammar, the instructor should ensure that the students have a certain comprehension of the grammatical knowledge by providing an explanation of the grammar knowledge in the book;but, the teacher is unable to ensure that the students will use English accurately.Consequently, the method used to teaching grammar in school is a topic that warrants discussion and investigation.According to General Senior High School Curriculum Standards(2017,revised in2020),English knowledge consists of not only pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, but also discourse and pragmatics. In other words, the teaching of grammar should emphasize discourse and pragmatics and aim to help students apply grammar in real communications.Nowadays deductive and inductive method coexist in current senior high school English teaching. The deductive method is a time-honored way of instructing students in which grammatical principles are presented first, followed by examples, and then by practices. The inductive method is a relatively recent educational methodology that begins with specific instances, then moves on to generalize guiding principles, and concludes with practical applications. Each of these methods of instruction are beneficial in their own ways, therefore it is impossible to determine which one is superior or more efficient. To provide more evidence on which method is more effective, the researcher takes the noun clauses as the focus of this study. With the use of empirical research, the goal of this work is to compare and contrast the effectiveness of the two distinct instructional strategies. The thesis is based on the theory of Learning by Discovery,Cooperative Learning Theory and Theory of Field Dependence and Independence. In the research,noun-clauses are taken as the teaching content in the experiment, which is carried out at an ordinary senior high school which is located in the city of Dingzhou. For the experiment, two parallel classes are chosen as participants.Inductive method is used in the experimental class A10 while Deductive method is used in the control class A9.Both the experimental class and the control class consist of 30 students each. There are no differences in English proficiency between the two groups. In the process of teaching noun-clauses,the author used an inductive method when working with the experimental group and a deductive method when working with the control group.A questionnaire was given to the students in the experimental group both before and after the experiment in order to gather information on the method that the instructors used in teaching grammar and the students’ perspective on the importance of studying grammar. In addition, the author of this thesis picked students from the experimental group and 5 students from the control group at random for an interview after the experiment has been completed in order to get insight into the students’ comprehension of deductive and inductive methods as well as their application of these methods. The data collected from the tests, questionnaires was analyzed by spss 26.0.The record of the interview was also analyzed. The results of the comparisons reveal that the inductive method is superior than the deductive method in instructing students noun-clauses.The majority of students believe that using an inductive method to teach noun-clauses can increase their interest in learning, make it simpler for them to comprehend the grammar rules, and help them remember the grammar rules for a longer period of time, all of which can improve academic performance.
