| Grammar is an important part in language and it plays a vital role in English teaching.It is of great significance to improve students’ grammar comprehension ability in foreign language teaching.However,many teachers do not attach enough attention to grammar teaching.And most of the grammar lessons are still teacher-centered,which can explain the phenomenon that students are less interested in grammar lessons.So far,many scholars and teachers have done a lot of discussions and in-depth studies on grammar teaching.With the continuous researches and development of these teaching methods,grammar teaching methods show the trend of “combination”.Besides,the deductive teaching method and the inductive teaching method have been proved to have positive effects on English teaching.Based on the trend of combination of grammar teaching methods,the researcher puts forward a teaching method which combines the deductive teaching method and the inductive teaching method to provide reference for grammar teaching practice.Through three rounds of action research,the thesis aims to see what effects the deductive-inductive method has on students’ grammar learning.This empirical research tries to solve the following questions:(1)What effects does the deductive-inductive method have on students’ attitudes towards grammar learning?(2)What effects does the deductive-inductive method have on students’ mastery of grammar?(3)Which aspects should be paid attention to in the application of the deductive-inductive method?The subjects in this study are 56 students who are from Class 11,Grade 1 in a senior high School of Xuzhou city.The author carried out a total of three rounds of action research during the three month’s experiment.During the process of the research,a detailed description of the implementation of each round of research was given.The pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire reveal the changes of students’ attitudes towards grammar learning.The three test results show the effects the teaching method has on students’ mastery of grammar.And the interviews show that most students can adapt to this teaching method and they have accepted the deductive-inductive method.Moreover,teaching journals were taken to record students’ performance and the corresponding improvement measures.Through the analyses of the interviews and teaching journals,the author summarizes what aspects should be paid attention to in the application of the deductive-inductive method in grammar teaching.The major findings of the research are as follows:(1)Students’ attitudes towards grammar have been improved through the application of the deductive-inductive method.Students’ grammar learning interest,grammar learning confidence and grammar learning autonomy are all promoted.Besides,students’ learning anxiety is reduced.(2)Based on the scores of the three tests,the deductive-inductive method is proven to have a positive effect on improving the students’ mastery of grammar.Students’ ability of grammar understanding and application are improved significantly,especially those whose previous grammar competence is at a low level.(3)During the research,the teachers should choose appropriate learning resources.It is important for teachers to design various forms of exercises and activities,which can arouse students’ interests.Meanwhile,the atmosphere of the class should be harmonious,which would not give students too much pressure.And all the students should be encouraged to take part in the activities and interaction.Besides,the teachers should change their roles flexibly. |
