| English grammar ability is one of the most important components of English ability,and grammar teaching is an important way to effectively develop students’ grammar ability.Through the observation and analysis of English grammar classes in six junior middle schools in Wanzhou District of Chongqing,the author finds that teachers attach importance to grammar teaching,but most of them use the traditional grammar teaching method,namely grammar translation method.After communicating and discussing with several experienced English teachers,it is found that teachers perceive the lack of vitality in grammar class and students’ poor learning state.Due to the influence of exam-oriented education and the inherent teaching mode has a higher advantage in improving scores,teachers mostly stick to the existing teaching mode.In the field of foreign language teaching,how to conduct more effective grammar teaching has been the focus of attention of English teachers and scholars.In foreign countries,Long proposed the form-focused teaching method in the 1990s;Ellis,Doughty,Williams and many scholars continued to carry out relevant studies.The formal-focused teaching method has achieved many research results.However,in China there are fewer studies about form-focused teaching method,most studies were on high school English teaching and there are fewer studies on junior high school English grammar teaching.Therefore,there is still a need for further research on the form-focused teaching method.In this study,the author carried out a 10-week experiment to verify the effectiveness of form-focused teaching method in teaching junior high school English grammar by using the PEP junior English textbook GO for it! Through theoretical analysis and experimental research,this study is to solve the following two questions:(1)What are the teaching effects of using the form-focused teaching method?(2)What is the effect of the form-focused teaching method on junior high school students’ attitude of learning English grammar?The author designed a teaching plan to apply the form-focused teaching method to the teaching of Grade 7 English grammar,taking into account the learning conditions of the experimental subjects.After 10 weeks of teaching,the author conducted a comparative analysis of the immediate test scores,delayed test scores,questionnaire data and interview records of the experimental and control classes and came to the following experimental conclusions:(1)In terms of grammar knowledge,there is no difference between the two teaching methods,both of them can make students master grammar knowledge.However,form-focused instruction is more effective in improving students’ grammar application ability than traditional grammar teaching method.(2)Students with different levels of English showed different attitudes toward the same grammar teaching method.Excellent students were more willing to accept the form-focused teaching methods,but some students with intermediate and poor level of English were more inclined to traditional grammar teaching.The form-focused approach is more conducive to maintaining students’ positive attitudes toward grammar learning and developing students’ independent learning skills,inquisitiveness,analytical generalization and communicative skills.(3)Based on the advantages of form-focused teaching method in improving students’ grammar application ability and promoting students’ learning attitude in this research,the author suggests that form-focused teaching method should not be ignored,and junior high school English teachers can apply form-focused teaching method to English grammar teaching according to the specific situation while using other grammar teaching methods,in order to better promote students’ active learning attitude and students’ English grammar ability. |
