| English learning is a comprehensive process,including listening,speaking,reading,writing and translating.Grammar is one of the most important aspects.Understanding grammar is extremely important for learning a language.It can help students better understand and use the language,improve their academic performance,and lay a foundation for their future English communication.Through the explanation of the grammar knowledge in the book,the teacher makes the students have a certain understanding of the grammar knowledge,but cannot make the students use English proficiently.Therefore,the teaching method of grammar class is a problem worth discussing and studying.As for English grammar teaching,scholars have put forward many teaching theories and methods,among which deductive approach and inductive approach are the most important.Deductive approach is a traditional teaching approach that firstly gives grammar rules,then examples,and finally exercises.Inductive approach is a new teaching method,which gives examples first,then generalizes rules,and finally exercises.The two teaching approaches have their own merits,and we can’t say which one is better or more effective.This study takes non-finite verb as the teaching content.The purpose of this paper is to find out the different effects of the two teaching approaches in teaching non-finite verb through empirical research.This thesis takes the non-finite verb as an experimental target,presenting a non-finite verb grammar teaching experiment carried out in an ordinary high school in Chai He town,Hai Lin city.Due to the poor quality of the students,according to the data of the past several exams,the average score of English is around 35 points(full score is 150 points).The author of this paper decides to slow down the pace of teaching and teach a grammar item of non-predicate verbs every week,which are the composition,usage,meaning and the different usages among them.It takes one month to finish all the grammar items of non-finite verbs.There are 30 students in the experimental group and the number of students in the control group.The author adopted inductive approach in experimental group while deductive approach in control group in teaching non-finite verb.Before and after the experiment,a questionnaire was conducted to the students in the experimental group to learn about the teachers‘ grammar teaching method and students‘ attitude towards grammar learning.In addition,the author of this thesis will randomly select 10 students from the experimental group for interview after the experiment to understand their understanding and application of deductive and inductive approaches.The result of tests shows that inductive approach outperformed deductive approach in teaching non-finite verb.The data analysis of the questionnaire and the interview proves that most students think inductive approach in teaching non-finite verb can arouse their interest in learning,understand the grammar rules more easily,remember the grammar rules for a longer time,so as to get better grades. |
