Abstract/Summary:
Conference interpreting in the field of technology is a typical category of interpreting activities. In this thesis, the keynote speeches of 2022 Stanford University Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Annual Spring Conference are chosen as the subject for a practice of consecutive interpreting. The difficulties encountered by the interpreter in performing the task include information redundancy, technical terms, the lack of logic in the original speeches, and intensive information input. The characteristics of consecutive interpreting determine that the interpreter’s processing of information is not a linear process but rather an extraction and integration of key information. In consecutive interpreting, the object of information processing is the discourse. The key to information processing in consecutive interpreting is to understand the discourse in the original speech. The discourse structure contains an interrelated framework with microstructure and macrostructure.Microstructure is formed by micro propositions.Macrostructure is higher-level propositions organically formed by micro propositions through certain rules. These rules operate on microstructures to generate macrostructures. These rules include deletion, generalization, construction, and addition. The former three rules reduce information in the original speech, and the last one, addition,is used as a compensating method to add proper information.Under the guidance of the rules, the interpreter performs operations on microstructures to generate discourse macrostructures so as to explore effective ways of processing information in consecutive interpreting.
