This practice report is based on the author’s experience of serving as an interpreter for The World Bank’sLoan to Gansu’s Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection and Development Project Conference. The authordescribes the interpreting process in detail and selects one English speech from the member of the World Bankdelegation and another Chinese speech from the director of Gansu Provincial Project Management Office ascases. The author intends to bring up the method for improving conference consecutive interpreting qualitythrough analyzing the problems occurred in the interpreting process and the strategies the interpreter employedin the interpreting. This report consists of seven parts: introduction, task description, pre-interpreting preparation,interpreting process, case analysis, quality control and evaluation as well as conclusion.The first part presents the background of conference consecutive interpreting and gives a brief introduction tothis interpreting task and the study questions that will be explored in this report. The second part gives a briefdescription of this interpreting task’s background, task requirement and the nature. The third part deliberates onthe pre-interpretation preparation work, including the interpretation plan, emergency response plan and thefeatures of conference consecutive interpreting. The fourth part is interpreting process. It provides a descriptionof the enforcement of the interpretation plan and the corresponding measures taken to deal with the emergenciesoccurred in the interpreting process. The fifth part is case analysis. It presents the cases that have such problemsas disfluency, information loss and wrong interpretation. The strategies the interpreter employed in theinterpreting were also presented in this part. The sixth part is interpreting quality control and interpretingevaluation. The author puts information delivery, simplicity and correct terminology as criteria for interpretingquality control through exploring the definition and acknowledged criteria of interpreting quality evaluation. Thelast part is conclusion of this practice report. The author arrive at the conclusion that a high quality conferenceconsecutive interpreting requires the interpreter to attach great importance to daily accumulation, make fullpre-interpretation preparation, comprehend the meaning of the speaker first and employ interpreting strategiesflexibly.
