A Report On E-C Translation Of The Letters Of Samuel Johnson(Vol.Ⅲ) From The Perspective Of Eco-Translatology

This is a report on the translation practice of The Letters of Samuel Johnson（Volume III）from English to Chinese.The text selected for this translation practice report is the letters written by Samuel Johnson from October 19,1779,to May 19,1780,53 letters in total,with Eco-translatology proposed by Hu Gengshen as a guide for the translation process.The Letters of Samuel Johnson reflects Johnson’s daily life and mental activities,as well as the living conditions of the literati and writers in 18^th-century England.The source text is a hybrid genre between the informative and expressive type that conveys both information and Johnson’s feelings and attitudes.The translation of such a text presents a significant challenge for the translator:how to convey the original text’s information while retaining its cultural connotation and communicative meaning.The translator adopts the Eco-translatology proposed by Hu Gengshen to guide the translation practice,which emphasizes the interrelationship between the translator and the translational eco-environment.Based on the theory,this report applies the“three-dimensional transformation”strategy and illustrates some typical cases in the linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions.Meanwhile,the translator uses appropriate translation techniques to translate the source text in order to adapt to the translational eco-environment and achieve a high“degree of holistic adaptation and selection”.Specifically,in the linguistic dimension,translation techniques such as conversion of word classes,adoption of four-character phrases,splitting,and conversion of the passive voice are used to transplant the meaning of the original text;in the cultural dimension,the addition of annotation and the transformation of rhetorical are used to explain and preserve the cultural connotation of the original text;and in the communicative dimension,explicitation,addition,and omission are used to convey Johnson’s communicative intention.This report proves that Eco-translatology applies to the English-Chinese translation of epistolary texts.
