A Report On Translation Of The Letters Of Samuel Johnson(Volume Ⅳ) From The Perspective Of Semantic And Communicative Translation

This thesis is a report on the translation practice of The Letters of Samuel Johnson(volume IV)written by Samuel Johnson,English critic,biographer,essayist,poet,and lexicographer in the 18 th century.The translation material is a collection of Dr.Johnson’s letters to his relatives,friends,book sellers,publishers and other people,in which the content,language and writing style change with time,receiver,matters discussed and mood of the author.The intention of the translation is to convey the meaning of the source text accurately and represent a comprehensible and idiomatic target text to the reader.The translation has been done from the perspective of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation by using the methods of literal translation,borrowing and calque.And Peter Newmark’s communicative translation has also been adopted by using the specific methods of addition,division,conversion,inversion,and paraphrase.This report expounds the applicability of Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation to the translation of the epistolary text,and illustrates several appropriate translation techniques in specific contexts.To some extent,this report can provide some reference for other similar translations.
