Translation Of The Letters Of Samuel Johnson(Volume Ⅱ)from The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of an epistolary text.The translation material is excerpted from The Letters of Samuel Johnson,which is undoubtedly one of the strongest evidences that can reflect the real living conditions and living details of Samuel Johnson,the leader of the English literature in the 18 th century.The first 43 letters of The Letters of Samuel Johnson(Volume Ⅱ)are translated into Chinese,with Jef Verschueren’s adaptation theory as the guiding principle.Based on Jef Verschueren’s adaptation theory,specific translation cases are analyzed from four perspectives: the contextual adaptation,the structural adaptation,the dynamics of adaptability and the salience of adaptation process.The report mainly discusses how to convey accurate information of the source text through concrete translation techniques and tries to reproduce the tone,emotion and style of the source text,aiming to ensure the readability of the translation and achieve the intention of communication.The report aims to explore the application of the adaptation theory to the translation of The Letters of Samuel Johnson(Volume Ⅱ)based on the practice and provide a valuable reference for the translation of similar texts in the future.
