Since the 18 th CPC National Congress,the Central Committee of CPC has attached great importance to cultivating and practicing core socialist values.The State Council publishes The Implementation Outline for The Construction of Civic Morality in the New Era in 2019 and aims to foster virtue through education.According to the requirements of the Ministry of Education and the editorial committee of English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education,English teaching should follow the dual objectives of instrumentality and humanity of language.Following the principle of English learning,this research helps junior middle school students improve comprehensive abilities in using English,promotes students’ ideological quality and make students have proper national identity,political outlook,moral conception and outlook on life,cultivates students’ morality through civil basic moral norms(patriotic,dedicated,sincere,friendly)teaching experiments in the English reading class.In order to do experiment and design teaching plan,the researcher analyzes the textbook,Go for it,reveals the basic moral norms in the 14 units of the textbook,conducts a questionnaire survey and interview in Dongkou County Middle School and analyzes the data.The researcher selects students from Grade 9 in Dongkou County Middle School and does experiments for one semester,2 classes per week(within 16 weeks).The purpose of this research is: The researcher analyzes the theme of the discourse in each unit,finds out the moral norms in the discourse,carries out the teaching procedure of "word selection and situation creation" and "discourse theme discussion",to cultivate and promote the morality of students through English reading class.In accordance with this goal,this study carries out a pre-test,teachers’ interviews and students’ questionnaire survey.On the basis of the results and findings of pre-test and survey,the teacher designs the teaching procedures and the development of evaluation standards and discusses the feasibility and operation process of in junior high school English teaching to implement the basic moral education of citizens.The results show that the average score of the tested students is 48.99,the median is52.25,the number of passing students is 14,the highest score is 75.The analysis shows that the students’ ability of using vocabulary to make sentences and analyzing themes of discourse are weak originally.At the beginning of the implementation teaching experiment,the teacher puts forward the principle of word-selection(generative,cultural and ideological)and the principle of situation-creation(the integrity of the situation,the instructiveness of the content)and the analysis of the theme of discourse(theme-confirmation through the title,full-text-reading with theme and thematic discussion topic meaning).Following those principles,the teacher cultivates students’ basic moral standards of citizenship through English reading experiments.The statistics of the test results of this study are: the average score is 60.50,the median is 61,and the number of students who passes the test is 26,with the highest score of 81.5.The post-test results are: the average score is 69.29,the median is 73,the number of people who passes the test is 38,and the highest score is 88.5.The preliminary results show that :1)Following the principles of "word selection" and "situation creation",the use of "word selection and situation creation" in the teaching of junior English unit discourse reading improves students’ language application ability and makes students have a better understanding of basic civic ethics.2)Following the steps of "Analysis-Read-Revelation-Discussion",the use of "discourse theme discussion" in the teaching of junior English unit discourse reading improves students’ reading ability and language application ability,and strengthens students’ awareness of basic civic ethics effectively.
