| English Reading,as one of the four basic language skills of Listening,Speaking,Reading and Writing,actually plays a more important role in the English learning.However,during the education in rural Junior Middle School(JMS),English is commonly regarded as one of the most difficult subjects.This is because,on the one hand,that there are fewer English teachers in the countryside than in cities.On the other hand,the students in rural JMS are commonly found to have little interest in English.Some of them are even afraid of seeing their English teachers because they have great difficulties in English learning,which turns out to be a major bottleneck restricting rural English teaching.Thus,this research is carried out to investigate the current situation of English reading teaching in rural JMS,and analyze the causes of the existing-problems,so that some solutions or suggestions and countermeasures are hopefully to be proposed accordingly.The research is mainly carried out by means of Literature Review,Questionnaire,Interview and Classroom Observation.The questionnaire is done by choosing 448 Grade Two students and 18 English teachers randomly in rural JMS as research subjects in Yiyang County Henan Province.At the same time,twelve English teachers and twenty students are respectively involved in the interviews.In addition,ten of the English teachers are also observed in their English reading teaching.Finally,SPSS software is used for data modeling and analysis in the research.According to the investigation and data analysis,the research findings are concluded as follows.Both the teachers and the students in rural middle schools pay much attention to the English subject.And they do make some good progress in the English reading teaching and learning.But 60% of the rural middle school students are not very much interested in English reading.Besides,they are not so satisfied with their English reading achievements due to the insufficient reading quantity and poor reading habits and so on.Meanwhile,80% English teachers in rural JMS still hold old-fashioned teaching concepts.And they also adopt one-way method in their English reading teaching day after day.Moreover,they have not provided sufficient extra-curricular reading guidance for their students.All these factors have affected the quality of the English reading teaching and learning in rural JMS.In the end of the study,some corresponding solutions and suggestions are put forward according to the survey results and problem analysis.The junior middle schools in the countryside are suggested to call on some English classes of interest in English reading.The English teachers are suggested not only to update the teaching concept in time,but also clarify the purpose of reading teaching.Besides,they should also try to develop the students’ interest in learning English and adopt flexible and various teaching strategies in their English reading teaching accordingly.And the students are suggested to practice English reading under the guidance of their English teachers.Besides,they should also try to learn some English reading strategies and skills and try to widen the quantities of English reading consciously.They are also expected to form some good reading habits in order to improve their reading ability. |
