| The Core Competencies of Chinese Students’ Development(2016)defines critical thinking as the basic competence of students.The English subject undertakes the burden of cultivating critical thinking,and reading teaching is the top priority of English teaching.According to The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022),English reading teaching should cultivate students’ critical thinking.However,in the practice of English Reading Teaching in junior middle school,most teachers still adopt the traditional teaching mode of reading and ignore the cultivation of students’ critical thinking.Therefore,based on the goal of cultivating students’ critical thinking,this study explores the English reading teaching model in junior middle school.This study first uses the literature research method to define the concept of critical thinking,and divides critical thinking into two dimensions: emotional tendencies and cognitive skills.Emotional tendencies include five dimensions: truth-seeking,open-mindedness,self-confidence,thirst for knowledge and cognitive maturity,and cognitive skills include four dimensions: prediction,analysis,reasoning and assessment.Then,based on the research results of English reading teaching and critical thinking and the theories of constructivism and critical discourse analysis,this paper constructs the English reading teaching model in junior middle school based on the cultivation of critical thinking.Next,the effectiveness of the English reading teaching model in junior middle school based on the cultivation of critical thinking is studied by experimental method.Descriptive statistics and independent T-test analysis were made on the effective data of the assessment of students’ critical thinking emotional tendencies and cognitive skills before and after the experiment,and the impact of whether the difference between the groups before and after the experiment is significant was analyzed.Finally,the paper discusses students’ attitudes towards the new English reading teaching model through questionnaire and interview.The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)this study constructed an English reading teaching model in junior middle school based on the cultivation of critical thinking.Based on the PWP teaching model,the teaching objectives and teaching activities were designed to cultivate the five emotional tendencies and four cognitive skills of middle school students’ critical thinking.(2)Through descriptive statistics and independent T-test analysis of the assessment data of critical thinking emotional tendency and cognitive skill of the experimental class and the control class before and after the experiment,it is found that the English reading teaching model based on critical thinking cultivation can have a positive impact on the critical thinking emotional tendency of middle school students.It can significantly enhance and improve students’ truth-seeking,open-mindedness,self-confidence and thirst for knowledge;The English reading teaching model based on critical thinking training can have a positive impact on the critical thinking cognitive ability of middle school students,and can significantly improve students’ cognitive skills of prediction,analysis,reasoning and assessment.(3)Through the questionnaire survey and interview results of the experimental class students after the experiment,it is found that the students approve of the new English reading teaching mode. |
