With the prosperity of Internet technology,some ways such as listening to books,reading pictures,watching videos have become a new channel for people to get information.But there is no denying that reading is still an important way for people to get information efficiently.Reading also plays a significant role in English learning.It is not only an essential source for students to acquire language knowledge,but an important carrier for the improvement of language skills and the development of thinking ability,which plays a vital role in English learning.Therefore,in order to highlight the importance of English reading learning,English reading has always accounted for a large proportion and a high score in various English tests.Teachers,experts and researchers are constantly exploring,attempting to seek a more efficient way to read English.In recent years,thematic reading,as a new reading method,has come into researchers’ perspective.Thematic reading is a method of sorting out many different reading materials with the same theme for students to read with the help of resources in and out of class.Through thematic reading,students can integrate a large number of thematic vocabularies,enrich the reading background of specific theme,grasp the structure of articles on similar theme,and thus understand the reading material more easily.Based on input hypothesis,schema theory and relevance theory,combined with domestic and foreign researches on thematic reading and with the help of thematic reading teaching experiments,this research explores the effect of thematic reading applied to junior middle school students’ English reading teaching,and attempts to answer the following two questions:(1)What is the influence of thematic reading on junior middle school students’ English reading comprehension level?(2)What is the influence of thematic reading on junior middle school students’ attitude towards English reading?In this research,the research objects are students from Class 6 and Class 7 of Grade 8 in Experimental Middle School of Yutai County,Jining City,Shandong Province.Class 6 is the experimental class,and Class 7 is the control class.This research adopts teaching experiment,questionnaire survey and interview as research methods and carries out a 16-week teaching experiment.After the experiment,the researcher interpreted and analyzed the results of the test,questionnaire and interview with the help of SPSS and other tools,and drew the following conclusions:(1)Thematic reading is beneficial to the improvement of junior middle school students’ English reading comprehension level,that is,it promotes the improvement of literal comprehension level,inferential comprehension level and critical comprehension level.(2)Thematic reading is beneficial to the positive change of junior middle school students’ English reading attitude,as well as the attitude of reading cognition,reading emotion and reading behavior tendency.Finally,limited by factors such as the number of participants and experimental time,this research has some shortcomings.But it can still bring some suggestions for teaching:(1)Teachers should study the teaching materials carefully and make preliminary preparations before carrying out the thematic reading.(2)Teachers should stratify teaching according to students’ English level and reasonably select the difficulty of reading tasks and materials.(3)Teachers should expand English reading resources,provide students with more extensive reading materials and teach students how to find English reading resources. |
