E-C Translation Of Environmental Description In The Skylark’s Secret

This translation project is selected from The Skylark’s Secret written by Fiona Valpy,a British writer,and the translator extracts Chapter One to Chapter Five for translation and analysis.This book mainly tells the story of family,love,sadness,forgiveness and belonging between two generations with succinct and expressive language and environmental description as the most prominent feature.The environmental description renders the narrative atmosphere of this novel and promotes the development of its plot.This thesis focuses on two issues,one is how to translate the environmental description well so that the expression of the translation conforms to the characteristics of Chinese environmental description,the other is how to translate these environmental descriptions properly from the translation principles of faithfulness,expressiveness and readability.This thesis focuses on the translation of environmental description.Regarding Introduction,it introduces the definition of environmental description,the background and significance of this research,the previous research both at home and abroad.In addition,this thesis discusses the function and classification of environmental description,which makes an analysis combined with the source text,and then classifies the environmental description picked out from the source text into two categories according to the classification put forward by previous scholars,namely,natural environmental description and social environmental description.Then it studies typical translation methods according to the classification of environment description and the features of environmental description discussed in the former chapter in the guidance of the principles of faithfulness,expressiveness and readability.Among them,division,linear translation,amplification can be adopted for the translation of natural environment description;conversion,inversion and voice conversion can be adopted for the translation of social environmental description.Finally,this thesis concludes the characteristics of the source text and the fluency of the target text that should be paid attention to the translation of environmental description under the translation principles.This thesis,starting from the E-C translation of environmental description,discusses the guiding role of relevant translation principles in environmental description,and tries to find appropriate translation methods to deal with the characteristics of environmental description.Through this discussion,I hope that the relevant research on E-C translation of environmental description can be enriched,and some references for subsequent people to study E-C translation of environmental description can be provided.
