The translation materials of this practice are from Through the Arc of Rain Forest, written by Karen Yamashita.Since its publication, the novel has been widely read in various countries and was reprinted in 2017,but there is no Chinese translation yet. So,the introduction of this work can provide a reference for domestic scholars who are committed to researching Asian American literature.Guided by Newmark's communicative translation theory, this thesis explores the translation strategies of environmental descriptions in Through the Arc of Rain Forest. This thesis first introduces the source text and analyzes the environmental description in the source text. Then,it specifically describes the translation process and the difficulties encountered in translating environmental description, that is,there are many proper nouns, long sentences with complicated structure, strong cultural characteristics and many rhetoric devices. On this basis, this thesis chooses Newmark's communicative translation theory to guide this translation practice. The core of this theory is attempting to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original. So,under its guidance, translators focus on target readers and take into account their expressive habits, cultural acceptance and aesthetic habits in translation practice.Specifically, using literal translation with notes and amplification to deal with the proper nouns in the novel, which reduces the reading obstacles of target readers;by splitting long sentences and adjusting word order, the translation is made more readable;and the use of four-character structures and parallelism makes the translation more aesthetic and attractive. In the end,it is concluded that translators should first identify the target readers of the translation, which determines the form of translated text and translation strategies. The translation of novels under the guidance of Newmark's communicative translation theory can gain more recognition from readers.Through this translation practice, the translator hopes that a comparatively ideal translation can be offered to Chinese readers who can learn more about Karen Yamashita and her works.
