A Report On The E-C Translation Of Malibu Rising (Chapters 1-3)

The novel Malibu Rising(chapters one to three)by Taylor Jenkins Reid was selected as the translation text for this translation practice.The source text is a long story,published in2021,and there is no Chinese translation at present.In this novel,a large number of descriptive and narrative expressions are employed to shape the typical characters under typical surroundings with its vivid,humorous and appealing language,which are characteristics of the novel as well as the difficulties in translation.Character description and environment description are common means to construct environment,three-dimensional character image and promote plot development in literary works.However,in this novel,the description also bears the significance of reproducing the author’ s writing style.In order to reproduce the author’ s writing style in the source text for the target language readers,the translator is supposed to correctly understand and properly handle the character description and environment description in the text.Starting from the translation characteristics of the novel and two narrative methods of direct portrayal and indirect portrayal,the translator mainly adopts the translation strategy of domestication,the methods of literal translation and free translation to reproduce the vivid image of the characters for the perspective transformation and implicit expressions in portrait description,psychological description,action description.In view of the difficulties for the translation of long and complex sentences in the description of human and natural scenes,the translator employs the techniques such as structural transformation,adding,subtracting,combining and transforming to restore the writing style of the novel,achieving a deeper correspondence.
