This report is the summary of a translation practice based on Machine Translation and Post-Editing(MTPE)mode.The source text is excerpted from the first two chapters of Machine Learning Fundamentals, with a total of more than 25000 words. This book is a science and engineering textbook published by Cambridge University Press. The text discusses the basic concepts and general principles of machine learning and introduces the related mathematical foundation. The language of the textbook is features with clear logic, much use of technical terms, and frequent repetition, making it suitable for MTPE mode. However, the pre-translated version by Google Translate provided by the client had several problems, including inconsistent translation of terminology, untranslated proper nouns,under-translation,over-translation,word-for-word translation, improper word order in complex sentences, colloquial translation of preface, and rigid literal translation of guideline sentences. These issues affected the text’s authority, fluency, and accuracy of information transmission. To address these problems, the translator analyzed the text types of this scientific textbook according to Peter Newmark’s Text Typology Theory, concluding that it has expressive, informative, and vocative functions. Therefore, this translation report conducts case analysis in terms of three text types, namely, the expressive text, the informative text, and the vocative text.In a nutshell,to fulfill the expressive function, the translator ensured the consistency of terminology and transliterated untranslated proper nouns to enhance the text’s authority. To realize its informative function, the translator used methods such as explicitation, omission, addition, and reconstruction to achieve efficient and accurate information transmission. To realize the vocative function, the translator formalized the colloquial translation in the preface and replaced the rigidly translated guideline sentences to better achieve the publication’s guiding role and meet market demands. The translator hopes that the specific post-editing strategies and methods brought forward in this report may serve as reference for the translation and post-editing of similar scientific textbooks.By implementing these strategies, the readability of such translations can be enhanced, and better publishing results can be achieved. |
