A Report On E-C Translation Of Sales In The 21st Century Through The Method Of Machine Translation And Post-editing

Sales in the 21 st Century is an English book written by Tal Paperin.In this book,he shared with his readers his working experience in the business world and introduced some indispensable qualities that salesmen should possess.During the part-time work at Fiberead Technology and Culture Ltd.,the author,together with the other two translators,was entrusted by Paperin to translate his book from English to Chinese.Before the start of the translation task,the author analyzed the source text by using Reiss' s text typology theory and found that the book is mainly an informative text.After conducting the text analysis,the author decided to complete the translation task through the method of machine translation and post-editing(MTPE).In the process of translation,the author used Google Translate as a translation tool,and conducted an in-depth analysis of the translated version provided by Google Translate.It was found that Google Translate performed exceptionally well in translating terminologies and simple sentences.However,there were also some deficiencies in the Google-translated text,such as omission and redundancy,inability to decode pronoun reference,lack of capability in coping with passive voice,improper handling of complex sentences,and negligence of the tone of the discourse.In the post-editing stage,the author adopted such methods as addition and deletion,referring to the source text,sentence restructuring and utilizing translators' subjectivity to solve the abovementioned problems in the machine-translated text.Though this report is based on his own translation process,the author also included in the report some previous research outcomes in machine translation and post-editing to prove his findings.It is hoped that the report will provide some insights for other translators who are going to utilize the MTPE method to accomplish similar translation projects.
