A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Railway Network News

This report takes railway network news as translation material to explore the translation of long English sentences in news texts under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory(CTT).News text is an informative text,which is logically rigorous.In the translation process,the author finds that long sentences occupy a high proportion of the selected texts,and a large number of long English sentences with complex grammatical structures are used in the text,which brings great challenges to the author.As a result,the entire effect of the translation will be directly impacted by how well a long sentence can be translated.Accordingly,the focus of this report is on the translation of long sentences seen in selected railway news texts.To this end,based on CTT,the author elaborates on the guidance of CTT for the translation of long sentences in news texts and analyzes three features of long sentences in news texts: multiple modifiers,multiple parallel structures,and multiple passive voices.Both the long sentence translation method proposed by Liu Miqing and CTT focus on understanding and expressing the meaning of the sentences.As a result,under the guidance of the CTT,the author adopts six long sentence translation methods,namely,embedding,cutting,reversing,splitting-off,recasting,and inserting,to translate long English sentences.The study finds that long English sentences with multiple modifiers can use embedding,cutting,recasting,and inserting.In long English sentences with multiple parallel structures,it can use cutting and reversing.In long English sentences with multiple passive voices,one should change the passive voice into the active voice in Chinese and use other translation methods flexibly.The application of the aforementioned six translation methods can realize the purpose of effective communication by giving the target language readers the same reading effect as the readers of the source language,as well as by conveying railway technological and economic information.This thesis summarizes the major findings and limitations in the translation process,as well as suggestions for future translation,enhancing the author’s understanding of translation theory and allowing the author to gain practical translating experience.This translation practice report is intended to provide some reference for translators and long-sentence translations of other similar texts.
