Using Communicative Translation Theory To Translate Long Sentences In Economics Texts

Increasing number of academic papers and theses written by overseas scholars is introduced to China as cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world grow year by year.Translation of these academic literatures serves as a bridge to academic exchanges.Methods involved in the translation of academic literatures are distinctive in many ways.Peter Newmark,an influential scholar from the United Kingdom,adopts Karl Bühler's functional theory of language and classifies texts into three main types according to their functions: expressive,informative,and vocative texts.Academic texts fall into the category of informative texts,to which communicative translation theory applies.Admittedly,translation of academic texts is a challenging task,and long sentences in the texts add to the complexity.This paper explores the translation approaches and techniques involved in the translation of long sentences in economics texts in the light of communicative translation theory,as exemplified in the Chinese translation of Technical Change and Industrial Dynamics as Evolutionary Processes(excepts).
