A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of Sports Culture In Latin American History (Excerpt From Chapters 4 And 5)

The translator is commissioned by the Institute of Latin American & Caribbean Studies of Southwest University of Science and Technology(hereinafter referred to as ILACS-SWUST)to translate Chapters four and five of Sports Culture in Latin American History.The book is a symposium with eight research articles.Chapter Four focuses on the development of gateball in Brazil,and Chapter Five is mainly about Atlanta Club in Argentina.Both chapters offer readers a rich vein of information about sports culture in Latin America-sports competition,figures,countries,and history.This translation practice report takes Katharina Reiss’ s Text Type Theory as the guiding theory.According to that theory,text types can be classified into informative,expressive,and operative.The informative text narrates facts,knowledge,information,and opinions,and its language is of strong logic.It attaches importance to the content rather than the form.The source text(hereinafter referred to as ST)is a sports history text which is an informative text.In addition,the text is content-focused,logical,rigorous,and objective.It is characterized by many proper nouns,professional terminologies,culture-loaded words,and loanwords.Therefore,the text Sports Culture in Latin American History is a typical informative text.Reiss puts forward a translation principle of informative text which is the faithful delivery of original information and orientation to the target readers.Based on that principle,this report explores the translation methods and techniques of sports history text from three aspects: professional terminologies,proper nouns,and culture-loaded words.The translator follows the specific context to deal with the professional terminologies to achieve accuracy and faithfulness,deals with proper nouns by transliteration,transliteration plus free translation,and amplification to obtain standardization.Literal translation plus annotation and free translation plus annotation are used to translate culture-loaded words to enhance the comprehension of the target readers.Therefore,under the guidance of Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory,this report adopts different translation methods and techniques to deal with sports history text combined with the features of the ST.In addition,this report can provide suggestions for the researchers in relative fields and references for the translation of sports history text.
