A Report On C-E Translation Of Sports Facility Text Based On Text Typology Theory

In recent years,the Belt and Road Initiative launched by China aims at enhancing the cooperation among the developing countries.The foreign aid training program is an important part of the initiative and plays a critical role in promoting Chinese culture.Sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and organized by the Fujian Provincial Foreign Trade and Economic Training Center,2017 Seminar on Sports Facility Management and Maintenance for Sri Lankan Officials was held in Fuzhou from July 5 to July 26,2017.The author was one of the coordinators in the seminar,responsible for the translation of sports facility text.Translation of sports text can be traced back to at least the first Athens Olympics in 1896.With the rise of various international and large-scale domestic sporting events,the translation of sports text is now playing a more and more important role.Peter Newmark proposed a text type theory in Approaches to Translation,which divides all texts mainly into three types.One of the three text types is called informative text.The core of the informative function of language is external situation,the facts of a topic,reality outside language.（Newmark,2001: 40）Christiane Nord proposed the four functions of text,which coincide with the typology theory of Newmark.She also put forward “functionality plus fidelity”,which stresses the importance of text analysis,the function of the text and the Skopos of the translation.（Nord,2001: 31）Since the informative text lays emphasis on the delivery of information,the author should pay attention to the accuracy of the terms and the consistency of the text style.This report is based on the author’s translation experience of sports facility text,in which the origin and meaning of the translation task is firstly introduced.Secondly,it analyzes the text typology theory of Newmark and Skopos theory of Nord.Based on the two theories,case analysis of the translation is conducted,considering the translation as a purposeful action according to Nord.After in-depth analysis of the source text,the author concludes that the sports facility text belongs to the informative text.When translating the informative text,emphasis should be placed on the delivery of information and the effective communication with the audience.This report includes the introduction of sports facility types,the translation of sports terminology and the description of management and maintenance of sports facilities.Finally,it summarizes the experience of the translation practice,the deficiencies of the target text as well as the suggestions for the follow-up research in this regard.
