A Report On The E-C Translation Of Putrajaya Line Phase 2 Tender Document

As an important form of international economic cooperation,international tendering plays an increasingly important role in world trade and economic activities.The quality of tender document translation directly affects the interests and responsibilities of later cooperation.Therefore,how to accurately transmit the information between different languages and texts and promote the tendering activities to proceed effectively and quickly has become the primary problem to be solved in the translation of tender documents.Tender documents have the characteristics of both scientific and technical texts and legal texts.Its professional nature,variety of industry terms and long and complicated sentences have greatly increased the difficulty of translating such texts.This thesis is a practice report based on the E-C translation of tender document“Procurement of Electric Feeder Bus(EB)and Associated Charging Infrastructures for Putrajaya Line Phase 2”(Tender No.: ssp-mrtc-fbge-ovpr-ten-00092)for the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit Project(“KVMRT Project”).This tender document clarifies tendering requirements of all aspects and the rights and obligations of both parties,which is of important reference value for later tendering activities.This report first attempts to make an analysis on the linguistic features of English tender document from lexical,syntactical and textual levels respectively and finds that the English tender document features frequent use of terminology,Manglish,modal verbs,archaic words and Latin words,and doublets and triplets at its lexical level,as well as abundant use of nominalizations,preferred use of passive voice,dominant use of declarative sentences,and frequent use of long and complex sentences at its syntactical level.Meanwhile,it also boasts a precise and formal text style with distinctive usage of provisos and vague language at its textual level.Based on its linguistic features and difficulties in translation,this report takes skopostheorie as the guiding theory,discusses the skopos and principles of translating tender documents and explores possible translation methods such as conversion of parts of speech,amplification,omission,division,transfer of negation and voice transformation.It is expected the linguistic features and translation methods concluded in this report could provide some references for translators translating other English tender documents.
