English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)emphasizes that,as an important part of teaching evaluation,English homework not only helps students consolidate language knowledge and skills,promotes students’ effective use of learning strategies,and enhances learning motivation,but also helps teachers obtain feedback on English language teaching,reflect on their teaching process and results,continuously improve teaching level and professional ability,and ultimately promote and realize students’ all-round development.However,in the current junior high school English teaching,the design and implementation of English homework is still a “one-size-fits-all” single model,which not only ignores students’ individual differences and personalized development,but also hinders the cultivation and all-round development of students’ comprehensive ability.Therefore,based on a deep understanding of the function and guiding principles of English homework,how to design and implement junior high school English homework under the guidance of the new curriculum standards is a topic worthy of in-depth research.Two classes in grade 7 in Taicang Middle School,Jiangsu province,were selected for this research and randomly divided into a control class and an experimental class,with 50 students in the control class and 51 students in the experimental class.The traditional English homework form was applied to the control class.In the experimental class,the new form of English homework was designed and implemented under the guidance of the new curriculum standards.Based on Constructivism Theory,Multiple Intelligences Theory and Formative Assessment,this thesis applies the action research to the design and implementation of junior high school English homework by relevant literature review.The duration of this research is approximately four months,and two rounds of action research have been conducted,the first round is the preparation and trial phase of the design and implementation of English homework in junior high school,and the second round is the adjustment and improvement stage.The research mainly uses questionnaires,test-papers and interviews as instruments to discuss the following questions:1.What is the current situation of junior high school English homework design and implementation?2.How should teachers design and implement English homework based on the new English curriculum standards?3.What are the influences on students’ English learning after the design and implementation of English homework?The two rounds action research results revealed as such:(1)Before the experiment,the main problems exist in the current junior high school English homework: the design and implementation of homework failed to reflect the concept of the new curriculum standards;monotonous form and content of homework;large amount of homework;single and traditional form of evaluation and so on.(2)Based on cultivating students’ core competences in the new curriculum standards,preparation homework,practice homework and consolidation homework were designed according to teaching objectives.Moreover,teachers should implement hierarchical homework for students at different levels;Meanwhile,teachers can enrich the methods of homework assessment.(3)After the experiment,through the analysis of questionnaires and tests,it was concluded that the English homework designed and implemented based on the new curriculum standards could stimulate students’ interest in English learning and improve their English performance on various school tests.Under the background of the new curriculum standards,this study designed and implemented junior high school English homework through action research.The research results have the following implications for junior high school English teaching: design a variety of homework to promote students’ core competences;enrich the content to improve the quality of the homework;design hierarchical homework to meet the needs of students at different levels;enrich the subjects and methods of homework assessment to improve teaching methods.However,due to the small sample of subjects and limited research time,the research still has deficiencies which will be solved hopefully in the follow-up study.
