In December 2016,the General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed that we should make good use of the main channel of classroom teaching of ideological and political theory courses.Moreover,other courses should guard section of canals and plant responsibility fields so that various courses and ideological and political theory courses will go in the same direction and form a synergistic effect at the National Conference on Ideological and Political Work in Colleges and Universities.High school English classes should also go in the same direction as ideological and political theory classes,forming a joint force to realize the fundamental task of fostering character and civic virtue.The General High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition Revised in 2020)stated that English have dual attributes of humanism and instrumentality.Moreover,high school English textbooks reflect the unity of humanism and instrumentality and contain a large number of “ideological and political elements”,such as Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era,Socialist Core Values,Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture,Constitution and Legal System,as well as Professional Ideals and Professional Ethics.High school English reading teaching plays an indispensable role in cultural education and cultivation of students’ reading literacy.Hence,the study of the integration of “ideological and political elements” into English reading teaching is an effective way to achieve all-staff education and all-subject education,and it is also an important measure to comprehensively improve the function of curriculum materials in casting souls and educating people.Based on the theory of all-round human development and the learning theory of constructivism,this study adopts the methods of interview,the questionnaire survey,experiment and the classroom observation to study the integration of ideological and political elements into high school English reading teaching.Taking class a and class b of a Senior High School in H City,Hubei Province as an example,this study focuses on two questions.The first is to know the level of the integration of ideological and political elements in high school English reading teaching and the level of students’ reading literacy.The second is to explore whether the integration of ideological and political elements into reading teaching can improve students’ reading literacy so as to put forward some useful suggestions for high school English reading teaching.Based on in-depth investigation and analysis,this study draws the following conclusions.Firstly,front-line teachers are less likely to integrate ideological and political elements into the high school’s reading teaching.The main reason is that the emphasis on ideological and political elements is not enough.Many front-line teachers do not understand this concept,even some teachers are reluctant to understand and apply it in class due to the influence of the baton of the college entrance examination,which hinders the integration of ideological and political elements into high school English classes.Secondly,this study reflects the dilemma of fuzzy teaching objectives,rigid teaching methods and single evaluation model in current reading teaching,which are the “roadblocks” that impede the development of students’ reading literacy.Thirdly,the integration of ideological and political elements into reading teaching can improve students’ reading literacy.This study carried out an experiment to integrate ideological and political elements into reading teaching.It was found that students’ reading literacy,such as decoding ability,language knowledge,reading comprehension,cultural awareness,reading habits and reading experience,had been improved to some extent through post-test interviews,test papers of students’ reading literacy level,classroom observation and other methods.Furthermore,it proves that the integration of ideological and political elements into high school English reading teaching plays a positive role in improving students’ reading literacy.Finally,this study puts forward some useful suggestions based on the in-depth analysis and exploration of the integration of ideological and political elements into high school English reading teaching.At the level of schools,curriculum ideological and political training should be carried out to optimize the teaching staff.Besides,combining with online and offline education,the second course of curriculum ideological and political education should be created.At the level of teachers,firstly,it is suggested that teachers should establish the concept of lifelong learning and constantly update the teaching concept.Secondly,teachers should excavate ideological and political elements in textbooks based on textbook resources.Thirdly,teachers should optimize the teaching methods of reading teaching and guide students to perceive ideological and political elements.Finally,the evaluation method should be optimized and multi-evaluation models should be established.At the level of students,it is suggested that students should eliminate the fear of difficulties in order to establish a positive ideological and political learning view and actively participate in the first and second classes to combine theory with practice. |
