From the pharaonic period of ancient Egypt to the modern era,portrait painting,as a subject matter of painting,has always received people’s attention.However,with the development of science and technology such as photography,the functional value of traditional realistic portrait painting has been severely affected,and traditional realistic techniques have reached their peak in history.For example,in the 17 th century,Dutch artists such as Rembrandt and Vermeer created highly realistic portrait paintings.Therefore,portrait painters can no longer merely imitate the concepts and techniques embodied in excellent works,but should rethink the subject matter with a cautious attitude,fully learn from previous experience,accommodate foreign aesthetic concepts and performance techniques,reflect the characteristics of the times,and highlight the individuality of artistic creation.Adrian Ghenie’s paintings are rich in artistic expression techniques,with a style between concrete painting and abstract painting.His works include a large number of portrait paintings.His paintings not only have the traditional modeling factors of classical oil painting,but also combine the structure of cubism,the painting techniques of abstract painting such as smearing,scraping,and splashing,impacting the traditional creative thinking of traditional portrait paintings in the past,Bringing a surreal feeling to the screen.Applying abstract elements to portrait painting will undoubtedly broaden the possibilities for the development of portrait painting.This article mainly explores the application of abstract elements in portrait painting.Firstly,the introduction section;Secondly,the meanings,forms,and value meanings of abstract elements in portrait painting were introduced separately;Then it narrated the life and artistic journey of Adrian Gunny;Taking Adrian Gunny’s portrait works as an example,this article presents his understanding of abstract elements and analyzes their specific applications in Adrian Gunny’s portrait paintings,as well as Gunny’s spiritual expression.Finally,this article explores the inspiration and influence of Adrian Gunny on my creative work,as well as my exploration and practical application of abstract elements in portrait painting.
