" Absurde " originated from the changes in people’s living environment and social conditions, which led to metaphysical painful feelings and meaningless and hopeless life experiences, and it emerged from the social experiences of the Western world after World War II.As a result,"absurdity" has become an outlet for modern human beings to face the dilemmas of life,a confrontation with the disillusionment of the world’s ideals. This essay examines the production and expression of the language of absurdity in painting, taking the situation of absurdity in the paintings of Norwegian artist Lars Elling and Romanian artist Adrian Gurney as case studies. The essay begins with a study of "absurdism",examining the basic meaning of "absurdity" in philosophy. The article then examines the expression and theoretical conceptions of "absurdism" in theatre. Finally,it explores the historical origins of the expression of "absurdity" in painting from art historical paintings, combining the allegorical meaning and language of absurdity in contemporary Western figurative painting, and analysing the language of absurdity in figurative painting. The work explores the historical origins of ’absurdity’ in painting from the perspective of art history, the allegorical meaning and language of the absurd in contemporary Western figurative painting, and the characteristics of absurd language in figurative painting.Through the interpretation of the diversity of expressions in the individual artistic languages of the two artists,we explore how the ’absurd’ has been extended and expanded in contemporary figurative painting.
