A Study On The Painterly Characteristics Of Adrian Ghenie’s Painting

Adrian Ghenie is a Romanian painter.His paintings are loved by people because of the strong recognition and impact.His energetic composition,powerful brushwork and twisted shapes are all attracting the audience’s attention.Based on the concept of painterly put forward by Heinrich Wolfflin in the Principles of Art History,this paper analyzes the paintings of Ghenie.Combined with the existing research,through the analysis of the evolution of the characteristics of his works in various stages,this paper expounds his inheritance and innovation of the traditional Baroque painterly style,and the new visual samples and aesthetic features that can provide in the figurative painting.In the first chapter of this paper,it illustrates the cultural background and context of figurative painting in the contemporary era,especially in Romania.After combing the relevant literature,I abandon the previous research methods on the theme,social background and symbolic metaphor of his paintings.Then I use Wolflin’s theory of artistic style to analyze his works from the perspective of style and language.In the second chapter this article introduce Ghenie’s life and experience.Then it analyzes his thought and expression in his artistic creation in this environment,as well as the influence of academy and European classical painting on his painting style.Eventually it is introduced that the basic concept of painterly style in Principles of Art History and the inclusiveness and possibility in contemporary figurative painting,the formation and origin of the style of his works.The third chapter describes the basic characteristics of painterly style in his works,especially his understanding of light and shadow,and his treatment of light and dark sides.Then,through the analysis,his creation is roughly divided into three stages.It shows the progress and evolution of his creation in different stages,from the early dark tone to the later expressive color and texture in his painting,as well as the expression of various themes.It shows the process of his painting from simple to complex and diverse.In the fourth chapter,by looking at Ghenie’s works,his works are analyzed from the aspects of space construction,dynamic arrangement,fuzzy characters,and application of light and shadow in his works.It is obvious that his works have strong Baroque aesthetic characteristics,his viewing and expression methods are the inheritance and development of a painting method and integrated into contemporary photography and film visual experience expression.In the fifth chapter,back to my own creation,I expound the inspiration and my creative ideas.On the whole,Ghenie’s works are a further attempt and breakthrough of painting style on the basis of Baroque painterly style.He created his own unique image narrative method by means of photos,images and other media resources,unique lighting,setting and a kind of digestion modeling method.
