A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of The Technical Texts Of Eaton’s ESS

In the ever-changing field of science and technology,the need for technical translations has also increased rapidly.Technical texts are considered professional and specialized,which puts high demands on translators’ expertise and translation skills,presenting a number of challenges for translation professionals.This report is based on the translation of the 10000-word technical texts of ESS White Paper and 5PX Gen2 APAC HV Brochure,commissioned by Linguitronics Co.,Ltd.It analyzes the characteristics of the technical texts and focuses on the obstacles in the translation process,as well as on the factors that may affect the translation quality,such as the translator’s Chinese language proficiency and the cooperative translation.Translation techniques and solutions are discussed,as well as shortcomings and lessons learned.The source text of this report discusses the Eaton’s Energy Saver System and analyzes in detail its operating principles,characteristics,and advantages.Additionally,it presents the latest products based on this technology to demonstrate the practical application of this technology to the reader.In the source text,the vocabulary features the frequent use of technical terms and functional words such as prepositions,which brings difficulties to the accurate and fluent translation.In terms of syntax,the text is dominated by long and complex sentences,passive sentences,and sentences with inanimate subjects.Such syntactic features put a high demand on the translator.As outlined in this report,translation techniques such as part-of-speech conversion,amplification,sentence conversion and restructuring may assist in dealing with the challenges on the lexical and the syntactic levels.Furthermore,this study analyzes the obstacles arising from translators’ inadequate Chinese proficiency,and the impact of collaborative translation on translation style,and offers related solutions in order to complement similar studies.
