In recent years,as global medical spending continues to rise,China’s medical device market has grown rapidly and is now the second largest in the world.As a result,there is an urgent need for the translation of English medical device technical texts.The accuracy and standardization of these translations are directly related to the safety and effectiveness of medical device products.The English to Chinese translation of such text is highly challenging due to the use of abundant medical terms,abstract expressions as well as long and complicated sentences.But it is also rewarding to discuss the translation techniques adopted in translating English scientific and technical texts within the medical industry.Clear Vue Series Ultrasound Systems User Manual is one of the technological product manuals,which is written with high practicability and maneuverability and intersects with multiple disciplines.Based on part of the translated text which covers operation safety,system overview,and maintenance of the diagnostic system,approximately 13,000 words.Guided by Newmark’s text typology theory,at the lexical level,this report adopts the translation techniques of addition,omission and conversion;at the syntactic level,it uses the translation techniques of active-passive voice transformation,verb-driven and division;at the textual level,it employs the methods of adding conjunctions and transitional words and adjusting the textual structure.This report aims to explore the features of the source text,the difficulties encountered in the translation,and techniques used to ensure accurate and appropriate target text.This report is divided into five parts.Chapter One describes the translation task and clarifies its background and significance.Chapter Two justifies the adoption and application of Peter Newmark’s text typology in the translation process.Chapter Three illustrates the features of the source text,particularly on lexical,syntactic,and textual levels.The overall translation process of the translation practice is also discussed and briefly probes into the difficulties in translation,including the translation of trademark and semi-technical terms.Chapter Four studies the application of translation techniques in practice,that is,centering on vocabulary,sentences and discourses in order to further argue the general rules of translation of technical user manuals.The last chapter reflectively summarizes the translation practice.It is hoped that this report can play an active role in reference and optimizing the translation of scientific technical texts with the medical device industry.
