A Report Of English-Chinese Translation Of Academic Texts:A Correlative Approach

Against the background of globalization,academic exchanges between China and other countries have become more and more frequent.Translation of academic papers plays an increasingly important role in the development of science and technology,promoting the sharing of research methods and achievements within academia.Entrusted by the author of the source text and Corwin Press,the translator translated the paper Real Gold vs.Fool’s Gold based on the theory of Newmark’s Correlative Approach to Translation,which hopefully could provide helpful ideas and reference for the translation practice and research in this field,and contribute to the academic exchanges between China and other countries as well.This report aims to analyze the problems existing in the translation of academic papers and discuss the effective translation techniques.Before the translation,the translator conducted textual analysis,reviewed literature and parallel texts,and found that the target readers of this academic paper are mainly researchers in education and pedagogy.In terms of lexical choice,the translator mainly analyzed the differences between Chinese and English,and adopted the conversion of part of speech.Different from most other academic papers,this paper uses more metaphors in phrases.In this regard,the translator adopted corresponding translation methods such as literal translation,paraphrase,and substitution to convey the information of the original text.At the syntactic level,the translator mainly analyzed complex and compound sentences,and used techniques such as division,combination,addition,and omission.At the discourse level,through reorganization and explicitation,consistency of the translation was ensured and the cohesion and coherence of paragraphs were achieved.This report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter introduces the background,purpose,and significance of the translation project.The second chapter illustrates the pretranslation preparation,including the introduction of Peter Newmark’s theory,literature review,text analysis,and translation tools.The third chapter,based on the Correlative Approach to Translation,summarizes some effective translation techniques in four aspects with specific translation examples.The fourth chapter reports the post-translation phase,which is proofreading and discussion.Finally,in the last chapter,the translator concludes this translation report with reflections after the translation practice,through which the translator expects to provide lines of thought for translating similar texts and contribute to international academic exchanges.
